“Ultimate Butōden”, one of the two names, was formally announced as Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden in the pages of Jump the very next week. Heading into the Nintendo 3DS launch window, few fans expected more action on the original Nintendo DS. From fighting games to card-based games ( Harukanaru Gokū Densetsu) to traditional RPGs ( Saiya-jin Raishū / Attack of the Saiyans) to action adventure games ( Dragon Ball DS / Origins), there really was something for everyone.

No reason to get the first game ( Jump Super Stars) over this one surpasses the first in every way (minus the slowdown on one or two of the stages).The Nintendo DS saw its fair share of releases for the Dragon Ball series since right up near the system’s launch with Bukū Ressen / Supersonic Warriors 2 back in 2005. Hours upon hours of enjoyment to get out of this game, especially if you like even just one or two series more than Dragon Ball. If you're going import gaming anyway, you might as well also pick up Jump Ultimate Stars. The DS is region free, so if you can grab the game, GET IT. The "What If?" stories are among the best I've ever seen in a Dragon Ball video game. Great lineup of characters, deep-enough fighting engine, and the customization and attention to detail is out. The true hero of the Nintendo DS lineup is a game that unfortunately never got released outside of Japan: Ultimate Butoden. Just hitting the early parts of the story is refreshing enough. I wouldn't consider it a "great" game but I did have a worthwhile amount of fun playing through. Lots of other refinements, and overall just a better game. I think most people prefer the crazy "What If?" stories in the first game, but the second game had great character selections, gameplay, music, stories of its own, etc. Super Sonic Warriors 2 was an early DS game from Arc System Works (who just developed Extreme Butoden on the 3DS, incidentally enough!) that followed up on the previous GBA game. The PlayStation 2 has Dragon Ball Z 3 / Budokai 3 and Sparking! METEOR / Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Super Dragon Ball Z, sure. I would argue that the Nintendo DS actually has the best lineup of DBZ games ever when you take diversity and overall quality into consideration.
